Guys fly into Lisbon expecting European Brazilians, loud salsa dancing and fiery arguments straight out of a telenovela. This is a big mistake! Portugal faces the Atlantic, and the women here have a distinct, slightly melancholic pride called saudade. They are indeed fiery and independent, but they will never tolerate a guy who treats them like an exotic stereotype.
Dating in Portugal comes with a special kind of spark: it’s romantic, sometimes spontaneous, and truly memorable. Today, I share everything I know about these top tier ladies, from what to expect in a relationship, to tips and tricks you should use and everything in between.
Where to Meet Them
I won’t go the “dumb route” and tell you to fly to Portugal to meet them – I think that’s the obvious part.
What I will do, though, is tell you this: wandering aimlessly around the packed streets of Porto or any popular city, hoping to meet a cute local, is a poor plan at the very least. You will just end up buying overpriced drinks for British tourists on a hen do.
This is why you should prepare in advance and meet them even before you land! Start online with old school methods (that still work, trust me – and they work better than you might think!)
I recommend setting up your profile on a trustworthy dating website around a couple of weeks before your flight. This is the tactical advantage you need and by the time you land, you already have at least a few low key dates lined up. This way, you also bypass the tourist traps and avoid risking not being able to meet a local while you’re there.
My quick playbook: write a short, honest profile, set a 10–20 km radius, say plainly what you want (serious, casual, see where it goes), and send a respectful opener tied to something in her profile. If it clicks, suggest a specific time and place.
Your First Date in Portugal

Yes, I know you can date Portuguese women in other countries, but if you are the one traveling to Portugal, you must know this. Even if she is the foreigner in your country, these tips below will still come in handy, because they won’t change the way they are based on coordinates.
Know that much of Portugal is hilly, and the ladies there are used to it. Lisbon is built on seven massive hills, for example, paved with slick cobblestones. If you try to wear stiff dress shoes, you will break an ankle – literally. Or you won’t even be able to keep up with her.
Keep your first date casual, and do a bit of work in advance to find a great place based on your location. Suggest a riverside walk, or a park, or whatever romantic place you can find in the city you’re in. I aim for 10,000 steps a day anyway, so a walking date fits my schedule perfectly while keeping the pressure low – and you’ll be surprised how in she will be for one (even though you certainly don’t have to go the full 10,000 steps during the date!).
Also, a quick espresso in a shaded square works great.
Trying to impress her with an expensive, flashy dinner right out of the gate can backfire. It just makes you look like a desperate guy trying to buy her attention. Keep things simple and wear comfortable sneakers!
The Standoff: Who Pays the Bill?
You don’t have to aggressively play the alpha male role and insist on paying for everything. Paying the bill on your first date is generally considered OK. If there are more activities involved, you can split it if she insists. For example, offer to grab the first round of drinks, but if she reaches for her wallet to cover the second, let her.
Keep in mind that many couples here split the bill or take turns paying in the early stages. So, treating her like an equal gets you much further than throwing your credit card around – that usually draws in the wrong type of woman anywhere in the world, anyway.
What Stands Out About Portuguese Women

Portuguese women will always leave a strong impression, not only for their Mediterranean beauty but also for their confidence and energy.
With olive-toned skin, dark features, and a natural sense of style, they stand out in a crowd – which can be paradoxically correct even if they’re in their home country. Just get to any city in Portugal and you’ll understand what I mean!
More than looks, though, passion and loyalty define them. In a similar fashion to other Latin-blooded beauties from across the pond (mainly Brazilian girls, or Colombians), they are fiery and fierce, they are fun to be around, and very hot-blooded.
If a Portuguese girl is interested in you, she won’t do things halfway – and expect this from everything, not just the relationship side: these girls are all-in, always.
That intensity is paired with independence. Many Portuguese women are well-educated and ambitious, with their own goals and careers. At the same time, they carry a balance between traditional values and modern outlooks, which makes relationships both grounded and exciting – perfect no matter if you are more traditional or completely open-minded.
Tips and Tricks for Foreigners Dating Portuguese Women
No matter if you date them on their own turf or yours, you’ll still be the “foreigner” in her eyes. And you don’t have to go through the trial and error I went through when I dated the local girls in Porto (and then Setubal, where I found them even more approachable, by the way). Here’s what you should know:
First, embrace the WhatsApp voice note. Portuguese women hate typing out long paragraphs, and unless you’re ready, her short answers might wrongfully make you think she’s not interested in you. That’s not true – instead, you will receive three minute audio files detailing their entire day. Send them back voice messages, because that’s how things go there.
However, if things take too long, I recommend reading my article with tips to make her text back faster. It applies to voice messages too.
Second, understand desenrascanço. It is the Portuguese art of figuring things out at the last minute. Plans will change more often than not. She will be fifteen minutes late more often than not, also. If you throw a tantrum over a rigid schedule, she will drop you.
Third, never complain about the cold inside the apartments. Portuguese homes are notoriously poorly insulated in the winter. Put on a sweater and shut up about it. Complaining just marks you as a soft foreigner.
Finally, learn to banter. They have a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. If she teases you, you need to be quick enough to tease her back instead of getting upset. Of course, don’t go all in from the beginning: test the waters first and see what kind of humor she has and what the boundaries are. You don’t want to ruin everything with an exaggerated joke!
Oh, and don’t call football – soccer. There’s just one type of football in Portugal and they’re really serious about it, women included!

If you like this type of dating rules outside of your culture and you constantly travel, I recommend reading about dating in Asia as a foreigner, or going in-depth with the Indian dating culture.
Meeting the Family: The Final Boss
If things get serious, you will meet the parents (and this usually happens sooner rather than later). Urban Portuguese women in their twenties and thirties are highly secular, so you do not need to worry about reciting Bible verses. But the family unit remains extremely important and you will have to pass the test of getting her parents’ approval.
While it’s very unlikely she will dump you if her parents don’t like you, it is always a welcome bonus if they do. So show up on time, dress well, and bring a small, thoughtful gift for her mother. Remember to be chivalrous, keep your hands away from their daughter during the visit and work your magic to charm them. It’s a massive advantage.
Final words
Dating in Portugal rewards guys who show up with zero BS. Be honest about your intentions, respect her independence, and learn how to walk up a cobblestone hill without complaining.
Match her energy, let the good food do the heavy lifting, and you will understand exactly why this country is so addictive. Boa sorte, my friends – now go out there and find your Portuguese queen!
